La Baule, the diva

A famous seaside resort

With its 9 km beach, ranked as one of the most beautiful bays in the world, La Baule has become one of the best-known seaside resorts on the Atlantic coast. In fact, during the summer, the population of La Baule-Escoublac increases tenfold! La Baule offers a choice of shopping, golf, a flutter on the horses or at the casino, well-being treatments at the thalasso spa, excursions to the surrounding area and sporting events, and is a perfect setting for holidaymakers craving some peace and quiet.

The Camping du Bugeau *** is very close to La Baule, which can be reached by walking along the beach.

A fairytale history

Originally, Escoublac was just a simple village, living in the shadow of the neighbouring seaside resorts which grew up in the 19th century, such as Le Croisic, Le Pouliguen and Pornichet.

But it was not long before two Parisians – Messrs. Hennecart and Darlu, who represented the company in charge of building the West Coast railway – were struck by the beauty of what at that time was "La Bôle" and by the financial interest in developing this village bordered by 9 km of beach on one side and a 700 hectare pine forest on the other. Surrounded by local businessmen, they created the seaside resort of La Baule-Escoublac from scratch, much like we know it today.

The developers at the time wanted to attract rich French and European families to invest in the bay. It was not long before a multitude of villas were built followed by seaside palace hotels, luxury hotels and the casino in 1904. That is how the little village tucked away in the dunes took on the character of a glamorous town, a character it will retain.
